I groan every time. I would if I could. Being able to walk is my goal. But for now and through out this past weight loss period I am still in a wheelchair for more than a few minutes at a time, maybe 10-15 minutes with my walker tops. So I searched out ways to exercise from a chair.
In the beginning I just did anything I could to move, waving my arms, "bicycling" as I lay in bed. doing toe touches from a chair. Then I remembered a book ( I'll tell you about it in part 2) that was about doing Tai Chi in a chair. That led to looking for books at Amazon on chair exercises which gave me the above title that turned out to be a DVD.
Anne Pringle Burnell has been teaching seniors to become stronger since 1996. She has a long string of credits on the DVD cover you can check out- lets just say she is qualified to show us how to strengthen our older bodies without injuring them. And all from a sitting position.
As the inside cover states " The Stronger Seniors Fitness Program is two complete workouts centered around chair exercises designed to work together for a balanced fitness regiment. " Be sure to read the guidelines, I just jumped right in with the DVD's and only recently read these. Wish I read them to begin with.
There are 2 DVDs. I started with the " stretch" Don't laugh till you try it. It is also incorporates core exercises for the abs and back that had me sore. But yes, slower paced than the 2nd DVD. This is a great one for those of us that are obese and haven't exercised in years.
About 3 weeks ago I started using the 2nd DVD instead. Truth be told . my grandchild took my 1st one out of DVD player and I still haven't found it. So I started this one. It has me sweating- that's for sure. My arms are sore and I now see the muscles in my arms and thighs.
It has 3 parts to it : Warm up and aerobics, Weights, and Balance.
I do the first 2 parts every other day. I trade off with Chair Yoga and Sitting Tai-Chi on the other days. Take Sundays off. The Balance part is standing up- someday I will get to that point. On the weights part they use 2-5 pounds. I use a 16 ounce water bottle. I'll work up to the weights. This is all about improvement . Not just jumping right in. Of course, I am talking from the point of a woman in her 60's just beginning this.
So- NO MORE EXCUSES! You can exercise one way or the other. The truth be told, until a couple weeks ago ( just after I started the self hypnosis) I was sporadic about using these DVDs- now I actually enjoy it. If you still can't bring yourself to move that body- at least keep up with subliminal messages ( that includes exercise messages) and or Self Hypnosis to help get you to the point where you want to exercise. Have a great- movement- day!
