I love coconut oil ! Plain and simple, it just does so much for me. It all began when I started using power statements ( ala Jon Gabriel) as I listened to theta or beta brainwave music every day for a month last July to hopefully be able to eat green veggies without throwing up. I thought as long as I was doing that I'd throw in the taste of coconut as well because everyone over on GM was talking about drinking coconut water on the cleanse and I was about to do the cleanse a month later. It worked and I now love the taste of green veggies (raw only) and coconut ( but not the texture still). Like the taste of coconut water now. Then one day I was buying makeup for first time in a decade and another shopper recommended coconut oil for my skin when I complimented her on her youthful look as she told me her age.
I started lathering it all over my body and love the feel of it. Then one day at the health food store I saw the above book near the checkout counter and got it. Most of the info I'll share with you here came from this book. Highly recommended. Blew me away and had me buying a second jar of virgin coconut oil for my kitchen and now I have a 3rd in my Gym bag to slather on before swimming to protect my skin from the pool chemicals.
As I talk about coconut oil's health benefits you will see "MCT." This stands for Medium-chain triglyceride. Also MCFA
( medium chain fatty acids) Before I inform you about the benefits I'll do for you what took reading most of the book to find out how much coconut oil do I need to consume in order to receive these benefits. Three to four tablespoons of coconut oils is recommended as the optimum dosage to get enough. It is best to spread this out thru the day but not necessary. I use it as a cooking oil , on toast in the morning and every night on those 3-4 trisquits I have instead of potatoes. This book has recipes that use coconut oil. Two other cooksbooks I've used are " Coconut Paradise : Coconut Milk,Oil and flour " by Sara Niles and "Virgin Coconut Oil" by Mary Engle. And before you ask, yes coconut oil is better for you than Bottled MCT Oil because even though MCT OIL has coconut oil in it the most valuable component of coconut oil , lauric acid, is not in , or very minuscule , MCT oil.
If you'd like to get the same health benefits you can also have ;
150 grams fresh coconut meat (about 1/2 coconut
1 cup dried shredded coconut
10 0unces coconut milk
Even if all you care about is losing weight to look better with no concern about health (been there, done that) you need to use coconut oil. : " Because coconut oil can also help regulate metabolism (see chapter 5) it can help the body burn more calories, promoting weight loss and helping to regulate diabetes."
Coconut oil used everyday can result in detoxification. when you first start using it. It stimulates the immune system, causing the body to clean out stored toxins and germs.
Coconut oil has a moderate smoking point (around 360 degrees) on the stove top you can cook anything at this heat. No need worry about using for baking at temperatures above360F because the moisture in the food keeps the inside temperature below 212F. I bake with it all the time. And as long as you keep the coconut oil below the point where it smokes ( any oil will produce toxic byproducts if overheated) you can enjoy fried foods with no worry.
In the above book you will learn all the ways coconut oil is good for your mental health including studies how it helps protect against Alzheimer's. At 65 this alone is enough reason for me to eat coconut oil.
HDL, the healthy cholesterol in coconut helps reduce LDC (bad cholesterol ) in your body helping to keep your heart healthy and maintain a healthy blood pressure level. Your heart is also helped by the antioxidants within it because antioxidants reduce inflammation. This reduced inflammation also helps arthritis symptoms.
The natural lauric acid in coconut oil helps you balance out your hormones, the saturated fat also helps balance out hormones in women who are going through menopause. The lauric acid has also been linked to your immune system. that same lauric acid along with capric acid also in coconut oil have been proven an effective form of treatment for candida infections)yeast infections). I know mine have completely cleared up.
Another thing that I have seen personally is the use of coconut oil as an antibiotic skin cream. I rub it on all cuts and it works, great for dry skin as well. There are beauty benefits as well but, that article is another day.
So go out and get a jar or two of coconut oil, just be sure it is organic , unrefined expeller pressed coconut oil, extra virgin is even better. I have used Crisco's organic oil , in a pinch, for my skin and it still worked, skin wise. Doesn't feel the same or melt as quickly as extra virgin expressed oil does, but easier to get. The book has so much more in it ( as well as online sources) but this is just a snip to get you interested.
